Closed Cell Urethane Foam

Proto Foam

Proto-foam is a closed cell rigid urethane foam made specifically for applications of up to 200 degrees F continuous exposure. This material is available in a variety of densities (6, 10, 15, 18, 20, 30, 40, 48 and 60 pounds per cubic foot) and thicknesses (1/2” to 20”). The standard width and length are either 2’ x 8’ or 4’ x 8’. Special order sizes up to 5’ x 10’ are also available. The higher the density the thicker the cell wall. This makes the urethane harder, tougher and heavier. The urethane cells are not layered in any particular direction so the entire sheet has the same strength in all directions.

The closed cell structure eliminates absorption.

Will not crack, rot or peel

Easily cut or machined with standard cutting tools

Less dust-more chips for a better working environment

Common Applications

  • Prototype Machining
  • Thermoforming
  • Prepreg Composite Layup Tooling
  • Vacuum Form Tooling
  • Tool Proofing
  • Model Making

Finishing Proto-Foam:

Finishing high density urethane is much different than finishing any other substrate. Proto-Foam is made up of cells, which precludes sanding the panels smooth. When the panel is cut, carved or sanded the surface ends up as a surface of partially cut cells. The cells must be filled to obtain a smooth surface.

The choice of fillers is very important because not all fillers will adhere to urethane for the long term.FSC-88 Filling & Smoothing Compound is a fast drying, easy to sand primer/filler that has long term adhesion. FSC-88 is compatible with all types of paints. The filler must be applied thick enough to allow the surface of the filler to be sanded smooth prior to coming in contact with the top layer of cut urethane cells. If the sanding extends through the filler and into the top layer of cells, a new layer of cut cells is created and the filling process must start again.
